Coronal Mass Ejection

LASCO C3 image LASCO C2 image
MPEG Movie (626K) MPEG Movie (401K)

Caption: These LASCO (Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph) images show a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) leaving the Sun at about 410,000 mph, or 650,000 km/h, which is slower than average. We have seen events 10 times faster. The event was not visible in the EIT (Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope) camera so we assume this event to be from the backside of the Sun, projecting away from the Earth. The LASCO instrument captures images of the corona by blocking the direct light from the Sun (creating an artificial eclipse). Instrument: LASCO; Taken: Oct 08 1999, 09:42UT and Oct 08 1999, 01:26UT.
