A Trio of Bursts (January 31, 2014)

Three solar disturbances in less than a day erupted from the Sun, with the ensuing particle clouds all expanding to the left of the Sun (Jan. 26-27, 2014). The third event is the most interesting as it shows the separated strands of what was a filament still holding some of its shape as it passes out of the field of view. We superimposed the Sun in extreme UV light (observed by SDO) on top of SOHO's C2 coronagraph. The black occulting disk blocks out the Sun so that we can observe fainter features in the corona. The still image was taken at 23:24 UT on Jan. 26.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
