PICK OF THE WEEK
Pick of The Week
A Day in the Life of an Active Region (December 31, 2003)
Hi-res TIF image (2.4M)
This close-up video clip taken for 24 hours on 25 December 2003
follows the frenetic spinning and twisting of magnetic filed lines
above a good-sized active region. While no large solar storms
emerged during this day (or even during the next week of activity),
it is clear that the dynamic activity maintained its rapid pace
throughout the day. Since this was the strongest region on the Sun
at the time, scientists were tracking this area closely. The images
were taken in extreme ultraviolet light.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display. If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov. |
