PICK OF THE WEEK
Pick of The Week
Solar Shakin' and Bakin' (May 28, 2002)

Movie (MPEG, 647K) and a smaller version (MPEG, 233K).
This image series over a six and a half-hour period on May 21-22,
2002 shows a series of at least three separate coronal mass ejections
(CMEs) exploding out from the Sun. The images taken by the LASCO C3
instrument show the expanding cloud of particles in visible light.
The video clip which begins at 9:12 UT shows another earlier CME
beginning around 14:42 UT. These events all originated from the
Earth-side of the Sun, and a shock wave from a CME struck the Earth
early on May 23, about a day later. SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display. If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov. |
