The most impressive feature this week on the Sun was the growth of sunspot 848 from nothing to a large sunspot over six days (Jan. 18-24, 2006). Though visible in various wavelengths of light in which SOHO images the Sun, it appeared most clearly in the MDI magnetograms. These black and white images reveal the underpinnings of sunspots by capturing their magnetic essence at the surface of the Sun. The white areas show strong positive polarity and the black shows negative polarity. Note how the pair of spots grows in tandem. While this sunspot group grew to a reasonably large size, it did not produce any sizeable solar storms, Now the group has decayed and the chance to produce flares and coronal mass ejections has probably passed.
SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
