Over a 14-hour period on 20 September 2003, two coronal mass
ejections (CMEs) erupted, one almost right after the other in the
same direction. The series of still images from the LASCO C2
coronagraph shows the second and larger of the solar storms as it
blasts away from the Sun and rapidly expands over a 96-minute period.
These storms typically propel a billion tons of matter at millions of
miles per hour. The video clip shows both CMEs. The field of view of
the instrument is about 8 million km across. Neither storm appeared
to be Earth-directed.
