Quiescently Percolating (March 24, 2006)

Hi-res TIF image (2.8M).

Movies:
MPEG: Large (4.9M), Small (1.4M)
Quicktime: Very Large ( 50M), Large (5.5M), Small (738K)

This is a rare treat for those with a casual interest in solar observations.

SOHO is undertaking some special observation campaigns that involve its imaging the Sun at a high cadence (about every 12 minutes) in a wavelength of light (304 Angstroms) that captures activity not far above the Sun's surface. The images were produced by emission from singly ionized helium. The resulting 300 frames, when sequenced together into a video clip at 15 frames per second, give us three days of almost uninterrupted video from late on March 18 to March 21, 2006.

The most obvious feature is the one bright active region that is seen rotating from left to right, but a closer examination shows lots of little motions and jets and streaming plasma seen most easily along the Sun's edge. If you have the bandwidth for it, we offer the full 1024 x 1024 frame size movie (49 MB) that really shows off these smaller features.

In any case, this is a treat that we do not usual get to see.

Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
