Sun Bursts (January 24, 2014)

The Sun blew off a series of particle clouds in less than a day, all heading in the same direction (Jan. 22-23, 2014). The first one, starting on late Jan. 22, is most clearly defined as a blossoming coronal mass ejection with its classical bulbous shape. It is likely that the second and third bursts are parts of the same eruptive event. In these coronagraph images the Sun (shown as a white circle) is blocked by a blue occulting disk so that we can observe these kinds of fainter structures in the corona.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
