The video clip (August 23-24, 2005) of two days of solar activity and the still of Active Region 803 (at about the 9:30 position) in ultraviolet light shows an interesting display of post coronal mass ejection loops in profile (meaning a tight series of loops that loom over an active region after it has erupted with a coronal mass ejection). This region is just beginning its trek around the Sun so it may provide some fireworks in the coming week to 10 days. The solar storm erupted around 6:00 UT on the first day, which is followed by a series of concentric arcs of the coronal loops that seem to blossom out over time. These are really particles being controlled by and traveling along tightly spaced magnetic fields. The still shows the array of loops at their peak.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display. If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov. |
