Eight Busy Days (February 22, 2013)

Hi-res TIF ( 11M)

Movies: QT: Large (216M), Small (7.1M), MPEG: Large ( 25M), MP4 (8.2M), M4V (2.6M)

The Sun popped off about one coronal mass ejection per day over this eight-day period (Feb. 13-20, 2013). None of these solar storms was really powerful, but their frequency suggests that the Sun is likely near the peak of its level of activity in the current solar cycle. In these coronagraphs the Sun is represented by the white circle, while the blue occulting disk blocks the Sun and some of the corona so that we can study fainter structures further out. The four-part still showcases some of the erupting storms.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
