An expanding coronal mass ejection (November 20, 2001)

  • Higher resolution version (TIF,2.5M)
  • Image series over a five-hour period shows a 'full-halo' coronal mass ejection (CME) exploding out from the Sun at over 1000 km/s. The images taken by the LASCO C3 instrument show the expanding cloud of particles in visible light. The CME struck the Earth's magnetosphere two and a half days after the eruption with little effect.
