Here they come again! (November 19, 2003)

Hi-res TIF image (4.1M)
After their last rotation across the Sun as the very large and
powerful Active Regions 486 and 488, these two spots are just now
appearing again in profile on the Sun's edge (18 November 2003).
Judging by the level of solar activity that was detected on the far
side of the Sun while they were there, one can expect that they will
bring more space weather this time around as well. Just how much is
the unanswered question. When viewed in four extreme ultraviolet
wavelengths, the area above the active regions seems to be churning
with strong, well-defined loops of magnetic field activity. The
images (from left to right) observe different material above the
Sun's surface and into the corona at increasing temperatures, each of
which reveal different solar features. But one thing is certain:
they all clearly see the hotbed of activity coming around the bend.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display. If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov. |
