We proudly present probably the best single sequence we have
generated of a dazzling active region (AR 375) as it rotates almost
completely across the face of the Sun over 11 days (June 2 - 12,
2003). This is from the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT)
taken at 195 Angstroms. During the course of its rotation it
unleashes several large (X-class) flares and numerous smaller ones as
well as coronal mass ejections. Above this active region charged
particles are zooming along channels in the magnetic field, whose
forces are breaking apart and reconnecting in an almost constant
flurry of activity. We consciously allowed the video files to be larger than usual so we could maintain a 24 frame per second frame rate at reasonably good quality and a variety of sizes. SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
