PICK OF THE WEEK
Pick of The Week
Season Greetings from SOHO! (December 17, 2002)
Without any manipulation or changes whatsoever just about all of the
sunspots on the Sun seemed to arrange themselves into a somewhat
puzzled-looking face. So, we decided to take this opportunity to make
the most of it and wish everyone a happy holiday season. Thanks to
all for their continued interest in the SOHO mission and the Weekly
Pick. The image was taken by the MDI instrument. Sunspots are the
visible tracers of magnetically active regions. They are somewhat
cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface so they appear darker.
SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display. If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov. |
