Prom eruption expansion (November 15, 2013)

Hi-res TIF (905K)

Movies: QT: Large (2.3M), Small (519K)
Small (3.8M), M4V (967K)

SOHO captured an expansive cloud of ionized gas and magnetic field that was probably produced by the same magnetic field disruption that produced the eruptive prominence seen a little earlier in extreme UV (Nov. 13, 2013). Watch the eruption in profile at the 10 o'clock position of the Sun taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Then SOHO's C2 coronagraph shows the cloud as it expands and races away from the Sun and into space. The video clip covers about 16 hours of activity.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
