The video clip of 36 hours of activity and the still (both in partial close-up) of Active Region 758 in ultraviolet light (May 2-3, 2005) that shows a dramatic display of post coronal loops in profile (meaning a tight series of loops that loom over an active region after it has erupted with a coronal mass ejection). The flaring and flashing of this region continued fairly regularly most of the week. The ejection of particles can be seen about 1/3 of the way into the video clip, followed by the shifting and changing of the coronal loops. These are really particles being controlled by and traveling along tightly spaced magnetic fields. The still was taken at 6:26 UT on May 3 and shows the array of loops quite nicely.

Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
