A Very Fast CME (December 11, 2001)
A good-sized and fast coronal mass ejection (CME) exploded out from the Sun on Dec. 11, 2001 and roared away from the Sun at about 3 million miles per hour (5 million km/hour). It was first captured by the SOHO Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) in 1.5 million degree plasma at 195 Ångstroms as a bright flash (easier to see in the video clip). Just three hours later, the image taken by the LASCO C3 instrument shows a broad and expanding cloud of particles in visible light that is already over 10 million miles away from the Sun. |
