Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (October 9, 2001)

  • Movie (Quicktime,855K)
  • Higher resolution version (TIF,4.1M)
  • A 'full-halo' coronal mass ejection (CME) explodes toward the Earth at about 1000 km/s. The images taken by the LASCO C3 instrument show the expanding cloud of particles in visible light.

As expected, the CME's particles impacted the Earth's magnetosphere beginning around 1 p.m. EDT, causing a geomagnetic storm that lasted for many hours.
