STEREO (Ahead) was able to continue to observe an active region with its extended magnetic loops that had rotated out of view of SOHO and ground-based observers (Nov. 2-3, 2009). During the 40 hours of the clip, particles trace and make visible the magnetic field lines looping above the active region. The loops begin to elongate and extend outwards during the second half of the clip. The region even pops off a small solar storm towards the end of the clip. This was the largest active region we have seen in over a year. Maybe it will come around into view again for the STEREO (Behind) spacecraft in less than two weeks.
SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
