For a two and a half day period (Oct. 30 - Nov. 1, 2006) SOHO watched in extreme ultraviolet light as Active Region 921 rotated around the edge of the Sun and began to grow. The region became larger and more powerful as the hours passed by. Its sputtering and twisting magnetic field lines danced and spun above the active region just about the entire time. Although it has blasted out one or two coronal mass ejections (CMEs), it could be the source of more solar storms in days to come and bears watching.

Previous Picks of the Week

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
