Pick of The Week

Eight Days a Week (and 16 years since launch) (December 2, 2011)

Hi-res TIF image (1.7M)

Quicktime: Large (9.8M), Small (1.5M).
MPEG: Large ( 25M), Small (9.6M), MP4 (6.6M) and M4V (2.6M)

Since the Sun produced about a dozen coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in eight days, it did seem like it was working overtime (Nov. 22-28, 2011). The SOHO C2 coronagraph shows the storms (both large and small) blasting out in different directions. The Sun itself taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory in extreme UV light was scaled appropriately and superimposed on the coronagraph for the same time period. It took over 1300 frames to make the video clip. The still shows some a composite of some of the larger CMEs. The times of the three stacked LASCO C2 images featured in the still are (top to bottom): 11/26/2011 at 07:48:06; 11/23/2011 at 10:48:06; and 11/29/2011 at 08:00:05.

Incidentally, on a different note, with last week's feature, SOHO's Pick of the Week (with help from STEREO, and even SDO on occasion) marked its 500th edition. We have been producing about 50 POTWs per year since September, 2001. The POTW has proven to be a reliable workhorse for showcasing some of our best content for our viewers online and in hundreds of museums and science centers. We plan to continue it for the foreseeable future. And, to top it off, SOHO celebrated its 16th years of operations on Dec. 2, quite a record of achievement.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
