The flag is located in word 101 of an EPHIN Level 1 data record (replacing ESU data set length) and in word 48 of an EPHIN Level 2 data record. The contents of the status flag is a decimal code (see table above) which results from the summation of the bit values. It is valid from the time indicated until a new status flag is listed. The code -1 (no data) is dummy. It will not show up in L1 or L2 data records as it is only introduced for the purpose of reading above table. An onboard software upload will set bit 2^2 (value 4). A second upload will not be recognizable as a status change (see e.g. histogram patch on 22-AUG-97, which changes the histogram build-up to only include events with parallel incidence). The status flag is generated by ground software and kept up-to-date as an ongoing process. The table resides in a file on ifkki::platte:[mueller_m.ephin]ephincaveat.txt. Example: In order to select data which are only taken with EPHIN in "nominal" configuration the flag shall have the following contents: Start Stop Flag Remarks ________________________________________________________________________________ 07-DEC-95 - 31-OCT-96 0 nominal=nominal observation without failure modes 31-OCT-96 - 19-FEB-97 1 nominal=failure mode E Rates: E3000, P41, H41 show zero counts, corresponding events are counted together with E1300, P25, H25. PHA: no PHA words for E3000, P41, H41, corresponding events are pulse height analyzed as E1300, P25, H25 without pulse heights for E 19-FEB-97 - 10-OCT-97 5 nominal=failure mode E with E patch, i.e. recovery of detector E pulse height, Rates: as above in failure mode E PHA: no PHA words for E1300, P25, H25 events, corresponding events are pulse height analyzed as E3000, P41, H41: E pulse height is zero for true E1300, P25, H25 events and greater zero for true E3000, P41, H41 events. 10-OCT-97 - present 69 Enable automatic A+B ring segment switching ________________________________________________________________________________ Note that the definition of "nominal" varies. After 10-OCT-97 another status change may occur automatically: "RING A/B off", i.e. bit value 2 is added. This status change is event driven, it switches to the low geometric factor during high fluxes. On detection of low fluxes, the ring segments are switched back on again. The occurrence is not recorded in this table, however, the flag will be increased/decreased by 2 in level 1 and level 2 data sets. In DEC-96 it was activated for check-out only. EPHIN level 2 data are already corrected for low and high geometric factors.
