Email Distribution Lists
The SOCs have three types of e-mail distribution lists:
- Aliases/lists under Pine at McSoc
- Majordomo lists
under majordomo@esa.nascom.nasa.gov
- Distribution list files on McSoc used with the shell
script sohoemaildistrib
In some cases a Pine alias
points and sends e-mail to a Majordomo mailing list.
Pine-based E-mail Distribution Lists
These lists are maintained by entering Pine and updating the address
book.
ins-esr (example: eitlasco-esr)
- Each instrument has one of these for all special operations and
ESRs
schedule_short
- This Pine alias is no longer used. Its function has been replaced
by a sohoemaildistrib-based
distribution list of similar name.
SOC+Stein
- List on the Bcc line when sending emails so Stein and us
both get copies of the emails we send
anomalies
- Group including OE's, Bernhard, Joe, Jean-Phillip, Daniel and Ton
who recieve any emails about instrument anomaly explanations
alerts
- Group who receives emails about Automation Alerts like limit
violations, includes FOT alert list members for all instrument teams
cdsops
- List of all CDS operators - Chris Maroney, Andy Matheson, Jeff
Payne, Ron Yurow
cepac_temps
- List for CEPAC incase of any temperature anomalies - Reinhold
Mueller-Mellin, Eino Valtonen
computers
- List for all computer users - Sarah Gregory, Chris Maroney, Kevin
Schenk, Walter Schmidt, Rai Wu, MEDOC net admin (medocn)
EOF1
- First half of list including planners, PI's, and anyone else
interested in SOHO
EOF2
- Second half of list including planners, PI's, and anyone else
interested in SOHO
FOT
georgeluis
- George and Luis if there are any files or webpage problems, or ESA
computer problems
mditempall
- List of all MDI people interested in information about temperatures
mditempops
- List of all MDI ops people interested in information about
temperatures
medoc_camp
minutes
- Group that receives the daily and weekly minutes - EOF1, EOF2, FOT,
LASCO, Planners, SOCs
minutes_local
- List of man y
of the local people who receive the daily and weekly minutes
nrttimes
- List exists but is no longer used. Its function has been replaced by
a sohoemaildistrib-based
distribution list of similar name.
ops
- List of the primary operations personnel for standard ops
announcements - may not be up to date
planners
- List of all instrument science planners
social
- Group includes EOF1, EOF2, the FOT distribution list, the planners
list and the solar list
special_ops
- Special operations discussion list for important announcements like
roll, offpoints, ESRs, etc - is up to date (NOTE: Roger Thomas
and Jeff Newmark aren't included in the list unless there is a rocket
launch) - is up to date
sumer_temps
- List for SUMER in case of temperature anomalies - Werner Curdt,
Dietmar Germerott, Phillipe Lemaire, Isabelle Scholl, Udo Scheuhle,
Klaus Wilhelm
UVCS_SUB
- List of UVCS ops people - use when UVCS computer is down
SOLAR
- List of all Washington area solar physicists
SPWG List
- List of everyone who receives SPWG information and minutes -
Majordomo list (only Tero can edit)
- Mailing out goes to the alias spwg, which expands to
spwglist@esa.nascom.nasa.gov.
medocn
SWT
- Group of PIs and Project Scientists for SOHO - Bernhard controls
this list
- This is a majordomo list which expands to sohost@spd.aas.org
Calendar Updates
- Group that receives any calendar updates we feel are relevant to
send out
- This is a majordomo list which expands to
soho-calendar-updates@esa.nascom.nasa.gov
Majordomo-based E-mail Distribution Lists
These lists are maintained by sending commands via e-mail to majordomo@esa.nascom.nasa.gov
(there are web interfaces for managing these lists, but we do not have one
in use). The commands need to be sent by the list owner and placed into the
message body (commands on the subject line do not
work). There can be multiple commands in a single e-mail — for
instance for deleting an old address and adding a new one. Some commands
have additional parameters/arguments. The most fundamental command is
HELP, which sends back a help file via e-mail.
For authentication the SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE command sequence has a
verification phase: the list server sends back an e-mail request to the
list owner, who needs to APPROVE the change.
The basic commands to use are:
Command |
Description and commens |
WHO <list> |
Provides a list of e-mail addresses subscribed
to <list>. Also explained in the server's reply
to HELP in section I. |
SUBSCRIBE <address> <list> |
Add an e-mail <address> to <list>. This command is
also explained in the server's reply to HELP in section II. |
UNSUBSCRIBE <address> <list> |
Remove an e-mail <address> from <list>. Also
explained in the server's reply to HELP in section III. |
APPROVE <password> un/subscribe
<list> <address> |
The <password> is list-dependent and the list owner has
it. |
We (the SOHO team) have currently the following Majordomo lists:

sohoemaildistrib-based E-mail distribution lists
The shell script sohoemaildistrib is a simple mailing/distribution
list engine used for automated mailings (although in principle it can be
used interactively from the command line). The script reads a list of
e-mail addresses from a text file and e-mails a file with a fixed subject
line to each address in the file. The usage syntax is:
Usage:
sohoemaildistrib <options and arguments>
-d <path to distribution list file>
-h displays this help text
-m <path to message body file>
-s <subject line>
-d and -m are mandatory
If not subject line is given, a warning is displayed
If the subject line (given as a string constant or as a shell variable)
contains spaces, the constant or the variable needs to be enclosed in
double quotes.
The script's definitive version
is mcsoc:/Users/socfiles/bin/sohoemaildistrib and a symbolic link
(primarily for use by the cron processes running
under dsn@mcsoc) pointing to that file has been placed
into mcsoc:/Users/dsn/bin.
Distribution lists implemented with sohoemaildistrib.
