JOP172 Coordinated Observations of Micro-Events in the Quiet Solar Corona Received 6 November 2003 SHORT TITLE: Coronal Micro-Events CONTACTS: Karel Schrijver (schryver@lmsal.com), Bob Lin (boblin@ssl.berkeley.edu), Brian Dennis (brian.r.dennis@nasa.gov), Andrzej Fludra (fludra@cdso8.nascom.nasa.gov). INSTRUMENTS: TRACE, RHESSI, SOHO CDS, SOHO MDI, SOHO EIT DATES: To be scheduled at times of a very quiet disk (in coordination with Bob Lin and Brian Dennis of RHESSI). Likely first candidate interval: November 11-13, 2003. Possibly to be repeated in March 2004, when TRACE is out of its eclipse season. SCIENCE OBJECTIVES: We plan to observe the small energetic events in the quiet solar corona, combining RHESSI and TRACE imaging with (when possible) CDS spectroscopy. The observations will form the basis of a joint CDAW to be organized in the spring (May?) of 2004 at Berkeley. First a test run will be made in November (solar conditions allowing); one or two further runs are envisioned for March or April 2004, when TRACE is out of its eclipse period. TARGET: Quiet region on central meridian, 200 arcsec N or disk center. OBSERVATIONS: TRACE: Mode 1) 171, full res. and full fov, with exposures of ~30s (on AEC), with WL, 1600 in context every 10 cycles. To be run for intervals of at least 6h, up to one day. Mode 2) 171 and 195 alternating, 2x2 summed, ~15s exposures (on AEC). To be run for intervals of at least 3h, up to 6h. This mode has highest priority whenever CDS can support the observations. Mode 3) 171, 195, 284 cycling 2x2 summed, ~15-25s exposures (on AEC), with a likly cycle length of 60s. To be run for intervals of at least 3h, up to 6h. This mode has second highest priority whenever CDS can support the observations. For the first run of this program, we propose Mode 2 for 6h (RHESSI, TRACE and CDS), Mode 3 for 6h (RHESSI, TRACE and CDS), and Mode 1 for the rest of the time (TRACE, RHESSI, and CDS as much as compatible with other plans), spread out over a 3-day period. CDS: 20''x180'' area raster, to complete in 75 seconds, with He I, O III, O V, Mg X, Si XII, and Fe XVI lines, with 10s exposures. CDS may support this program for periods of up to 6h, to be coordinated with TRACE mode 2 as defined above. RHESSI: To operate in its most sensitive mode, with all shutters open. MDI: Co-temporal with MDI's 60-day continuous observing program. EIT: 195 CME watch and synoptics
