1. Review of action items

SUMER/MDI/UVCS/CDS/LASCO/EIT: Review description of observational sequence(s) for Major Flare Watch (JOP153/MMOP003). Note: No SUMER program defined.

2. Boundary conditions

* No maneuvers are scheduled for the current planning period. Next maneuver was scheduled for May 21, with both station keeping + momentum management. Fuel estimate for the station keeping only was roughly 0.5 kg, with about 1 hour burn time. However, there have been holes in MDI's 60 days continuous caused by TDRS problems (e.g. two large gaps Saturday March 23), and the maneuver will be postponed (however, for contingency purposes the original May 21 date will be kept available). Likely dates for a postponed maneuver are May 23 and June 3. The fuel estimate for the station keeping will be larger, roughly 0.75 kg on June 3, with 1.5 hour burn time * MDI continuous observations "started" (we think) on March 23. * MSSTA-III EUV rocket scheduled for April 10, 2002 (JOP156) * VAULT (JOP148) will most likely be launched on May 17. Attempts were being made to use SUMER's & CDS's closed-door time for the May 21 maneuver to do the submode 6 activities, but since the maneuver is being moved, they're shooting for the last non-MEDOC workday. * EIT bakeout: March 29 - April 2 * Submodes: Submode 6 until April 5, time of switch to Submode 5 TBD at weekly meeting. Submode 5 for these activities: SUMER plans to be turned back on April 5, doing some engineering before a JOP104+JOP137 run starting April 8, 9, or 10, lasting until May 20 (JOP137 ends April 20), followed by: MEDOC #9 May 20-Jun 2/Jun 5. The MEDOC campaign was extended to June 5 given that the maneuver would be on May 21, with the start of the MEDOC campaign on May 22. If the maneuver is moved to June 3, the end date will be the 2nd as originally planned. Submode 5 interruptions (i.e. Submode 6): VAULT launch (JOP148) - see above. About 3 hours needed in Submode 6, but some extensions may be necessary to accomodate CDS contingencies. Note that if a Major Flare Alert occurs in Submode 5, and SUMER is not doing Major Flare Watch-relevant observations, submode switches may be negotiated. * Commanding outlook: See AOB section. * EIT CalRoc and CELIAS/SEM launches shooting for a joint launch date in early August (on the 7th +/- 7 days). We will have a repeated, possibly modified, offpoint maneuver close in time, preferably after the calibrations, tentative date is August 15th. * The MDI team is on a track to reduce the MDI shutter usage to half or less of present usage. See full message under AOB. In short - if you have projects that require high-cadence MDI support, now is a good time to ask, and make sure to make specific requests if you need MDI data.

3. JOPs status

Note: In the future, this section will cease to exist as a separate agenda item (by popular demand). Discussions regarding new or modified JOPs will be moved to the section for Joint observing plans and campaigns, together with the scheduling of those JOPs. JOPs where dates are yet TBD will also be considered under the same section. New: JOP153 Major Flare Watch, POC: Stein Haugan/Richard Canfield, CDS/EIT/LASCO/SUMER/MDI/UVCS/TRACE/HESSI/MaxMillennium No changes requested. JOP154 Joint SOHO-GBO Campaign to Study Chromospheric and Photospheric Network, MDI/SST/DOT/TRACE, POC: J.M.Krijger MDI cannot take 30 second cadence data, and cannot support w/high res data for proposed period. Deputy: B. Kliem (SUMER, not MDI!). This is not TRACE's highest priority for the time period. JOP155 Polar Coronal Jets at the Declining Phase of the Solar Cycle, UVCS/EIT/LASCO/CDS/TRACE, POC: Danuta Dobrzycka, Local: Michael Uzzo, Yuan-Kuen Ko EIT cannot do this as is, even in submode 6. Modifications are needed: Just one line, either 195 or 304, and max total cadence is 12 min, subfields may be possible. CDS will only support from April 22. News to TRACE representative - JOP104 is their priority, and supporting this in addition would mean too much switching of targets/passbands. JOP156 Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array III, MSSTA/EIT/CDS/TRACE/GBOs, Local POC: Dawn Myers, POC: Dennis Martinez-Galarce (denmart@brahe.stanford.edu) EIT: Only one set of synoptic images is possible (and it will take more than the duration of the flight to execute that set). UVCS may want to participate, given the large field of view.

4. Priorities for the coming month (W14 - W17, April 1 - April 28)

a) Joint observing plans and campaigns W Mar 27 EIT Shutterless Run Number 6 (#6852), EIT/CDS/HESSI/TRACE, 17-19:40 UT POC: Kevin Schenk W Apr 03 EIT Shutterless Run Number 6 (#6852) Backup Date EIT/CDS/HESSI/TRACE, POC: Kevin Schenk * Apr 8-20 JOP137 Active Region Loops, CDS/SUMER/TRACE, 17 hours per day, POC: Olav Kjeldseth-Moe, Terje Fredvik (TBC) * Apr 8-May 20 JOP104 Doppler Shifts in X-Ray Jets, SUMER/CDS/TRACE/UVCS, POC: Davina Innes, UVCS starts 14th * Apr 8-23 Photospheric Magnetic Signatures Study, Sac Peak(ASP)/TRACE/MDI, POC: Ted Tarbell, MDI/TRACE Planner TRACE support only when compatible with JOP104/137. W Apr 10 JOP156 Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array III (launch), MSSTA/EIT/CDS/TRACE/GBOs, Local POC: Dawn Myers, POC: Dennis Martinez-Galarce (denmart@brahe.stanford.edu) * Apr 14-29 JOP155 Polar Coronal Jets at the Declining Phase of the Solar Cycle, UVCS/EIT/LASCO/CDS/TRACE, POC: Danuta Dobrzycka, Local: Michael Uzzo, Yuan-Kuen Ko CDS has it listed for April 22-29 (conflicts w/JOP137) TRACE has not received a request, and supporting it in parallell with other programs (JOP104/137) would mean switching targets and passbands more often than desired. * Apr/May JOP148 VAULT Sub-arcsecond Imaging of the Solar Atmosphere, VAULT/TRACE/BBSO/KPNO-SP/MDI/EIT, POC: Angelos Vourlidas, Local POC: Gareth Lawrence No MDI high res * Apr 21-May 3 JOP154 Joint SOHO-GBO Campaign to Study Chromospheric and Photospheric Network (TBC), SST/DOT/TRACE MDI cannot support this with high-res as requested (CC) Targets of opportunity: * JOP136/MMOP009 Default HESSI collaboration (#6850) * JOP153/MMOP003 Major Flare Alert Campaign number 6850 has been set aside for "individual instrument studies" that select their AR target [partially] influenced by the HESSI target. Note that the HESSI target will be observed by a significant number of ground based observatories, so chances for serendipitous co-observations are larger when selecting the HESSI target. b) Individual instrument plans SUMER plans to be turned back on April 5, doing some engineering before a JOP104+JOP137 run starting April 8, 9, or 10, lasting until May 20 (JOP137 ends April 20), followed by: MEDOC #9 May 20-Jun 5 (dates TBC). UVCS * Mar 30-Apr 2 UVCS HESSI Campaign Floating Days Note: This activity will be moved to whenever a Major Flare Watch occurs See also SOHO monthly calendar for weekly plans CDS See their request diary for details (http://solg2.bnsc.rl.ac.uk/scientificops/request.shtml) MDI: Default plan is full disk (continuous contact). TRACE: Currently in 171 Angstrom. 26 March-7 April tracking AR. LASCO/EIT: See bakeout/shutterless above. c) Intercalibration activities Last Intercal 1: March 13 * Week 15/16/17 Intercal 1, CDS/EIT, POC: CDS planner

5. Preview of future months

* See the Monthly Calendar at: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/head_calendar.html

6. AOB

* Next SPWG: Friday, April 19, 2pm * DSN support should be requested at least 6 months in advance. Keep this in mind for: ground-based collaborations that require MDI support, stellar/shutterless observations that require NRT, etc. * The MDI team is on a track to reduce the MDI shutter usage to half or less of present usage. to allow the instrument to be used for another 5 or more years. We expect to have a meeting to review shutter status and plan long-term operations in a few weeks. We are still determining what changes are practical, but one of the things being considered is elimination of the nominal 8-hour campaigns as much as possible, subject to compelling science arguments. So we want to give our colleagues a heads up that MDI may not provide very good collaborative support during the late summer and fall, although we hope to return to collaborative mode in some reduced level around the first of the year. In short - if you have projects that require high-cadence MDI support, now is a good time to ask! Also, if you need MDI data, make sure you request it specifically. * Commanding outlook - These times are subject to change - More details available if wanted: Week 14 - April 1-7: Monday - Wednesday and Sunday have D27 in the afternoons, Thursday and Saturday have D27 all day, Friday is good, D/L only station on Monday in the early afternoon.
