SOHO SPWG Minutes

SPWG, FRIDAY August 20, 1999 Meeting Mintues

1. Review of action items

* New action item: Craig DeForest to update or create a JOP for the North polar plume study, such that it can be incorporated into Whole Sun Month. Completed, JOP110 submitted. * Intercal001. Check status of potential updates. No new updates. The TRACE representative suggested that the SOC send a reminder to TRACE in 2 weeks (since they will be busy until then)... to see if a write-up can be added for the TRACE component.

2. Boundary conditions

- Upcoming Maneuvers No changes to Gyroless Schedule. There is no detailed schedule yet available. Instrument teams should not expect to see any detailed schedule until after the Labor Day holiday (Sept 6). For a reminder of impacts, refer to the July 22 daily meeting minutes: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/operations/SOT/sot.19990722 - MDI Continuous The regular MDI continuous occurs during the time of the gyroless activities. However, the extra support for JOP097 was requested many months previous resulting in almost continuous contact. The MDI team has been asked to use this earlier period of Sept 9/10 - 19/20 for their continuous observations. MDI commented that they will plan to use this for JOP097 support.

3. Priorities for the coming month

a) Joint observing plans - Whole Sun Month #3 See, http://sohops.gsfc.nasa.gov/whole_sun/WSM3/wsm3new.html See monthly calendar as usual. b) Individual instrument plans - CDS: Aside from Joint Observing plans, during week#36 would be focusing on Olso sunspot and active region studies. Also will run their sunspot oscillations study in parallel with JOPO97. - TRACE: Filament study for 17-20 of September planned. - UVCS: 30 Aug - 4 Sep Kuen Ko Rho Leo until Sept 1, then streamer observations (W. Limb) slow speed wind properties 5 Sep - 11 Sep S. Giordano Global coronal scan (W. Limb) to include streamers and Quiet Sun 12 Sep - 15 Sep L. Stachan DD velocities of streamers at R >> 5rsun coordinated observations with EISCAT IPS measurements also include spectral lines for J. Raymond - MDI: full-disk doppler and magnetograms with perhaps some high resolution studies if the JOP097 target cooperates. Mainly a two-variable campaign. - EIT: Scheduling a bake-out tentatively after the MEDOC campaign and prior to the Mercury transit. Penciled in the dates of October 22-25 for the EIT bakeout. - LASCO: Additional observations in C2 and pB for were requested by Richard Frazin during the end of August for supporting UVCS observations of Rho Leo. LASCO will be observing Mercury during superior conjunction (Mercury passing behind the Sun) on September 9. Dr. Anthony Mallama of STX/GSFC wants to use photometric data to study the composition of Mercury and LASCO observations are the only way he can do it! This will be a dry run for a better opportunity (closer conjunction) in May 2000. The program will involve taking short exposure images in C2 along with the normal synoptic images when Mercury is near conjunction. We can't do it right at conjunction because the planet is behind the Sun. The November conjunction is not suitable because it is an inferior conjunction, so we will only see the dark side of Mercury. c) Intercalibration activities ICAL001 scheduled for Wednesday, September 15. (After Whole Sun Month and prior to the Gyroless Activities).

4. Preview of future months

* See the Monthly Calendar at: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/soc/head_calendar.html

5. JOPs status

- Review of JOPs as number approaches/reaches 100. Status: Postponed until after September 1999.

6. New JOPs

* JOP110 submitted by Craig DeForest. Structure of the Solar Poles During the Magnetic Transition. CDS/EIT/LASCO/MDI/TRACE

7. AOB

* Next SPWGs: - Friday, September 17 at 2:00 pm. Please submit JOPs by September 12. Discussion of MEDOC #4 campaign will be at this SPWG. - Friday, October 15 at 2:00 pm. Please submit JOPs by October 10. - October 21-22 is the SWT at GSFC. * REMINDER: DSN support should be requested at least 6 months in advance. Keep this in mind for: ground-based collaborations that require MDI support, stellar observations that require NRT, etc. --- adjourned, 3:06 pm end of minutes.
