SPWG MEETING MINUTES, FRIDAY 23 MAY 1997

NOTE: The June SPWG meeting has been set on Tuesday June 24, to
avoid overlap with the SOHO workshop and SPD meeting, the
July SPWG is scheduled for Friday July 25, to avoid overlap
with the Abingdon SWT, and to avoid having it too early in
the month.
1. Review of action items:

97_2.2 Action on EIT to provide SOC information concerning desired
EIT offpointing
STATUS: EIT must respond by August 1 in writing of their intentions.
Probably want to schedule this with the Momentum Management
Station Keeping, Roll around 15 September (see section 2).
NEW ACTION ITEM (97_5.1) -- The next station keeping and momentum
management activities are in the week of September 15.
Therefore, any roll maneuver, offpoint, would also be
scheduled around this time.
The FOT has asked FDF to look into a +90 degree roll for
SWAN during this time. Any inputs concerning the next roll
maneuver should be submitted to the SOC before August 1.
(the sooner the better).
2. Boundary conditions for the coming month
- MDI Continuous: whole month of June (until July 13 continuous lasts)
- June 1, SVM Memory Dump and Tape Recorder Maintenance,
6 hours SVM reserved
- Changes in Station Handovers After Continuous Contact:
After continuous contact for MDI is over, the FOT will need to get more
ranging data. (Four hours a day for three weeks with one hour of data in
the Southern Hemisphere.) With the receiver #1 anomaly, this takes 15
minutes to sweep and get both receivers locked.
The FOT will try to do most of their ranging on the short DSN contacts;
however, there may be times when ranging data will have to be obtained
during the long contact during a DSN handover. This means for experiment
teams that:
-- Instead of the typical 10 minutes of SVM reserved time to perform
a station handover, there will be no NRT for 40 minutes. During
which time there will be a 1-2 minute loss of telemetry when the
spacecraft is commanded into noncoherent mode. (2 minutes being
worst case).
-- There will be no data lost on the short passes, since the SSR stays
on. However, the ranging activity will "shorten" the already short
pass and the FOT may have to lengthen the duration of the short pass
in their DSN scheduling.
The FOT pointed out that this would only occur if needed -- we should not
see 40 minute handovers during the long pass every day... This is a
"worst case" scenario.

3. Preview of future months

A large amount of coordinated observations has been announced for
July. Teams are requested to set priorities well in advance, if
needed. For the latest calendar update, see:

- During the week of September 15 there will be the next spacecraft
momentum management and station keeping maneuvers. Teams should note
that the next station keeping shall be larger than past burns.
Previous burn times ran only 1- 2 minutes; however, this burn duration
is estimated at 13-15 minutes. (Delta-v ~2.1 m/s)
4. Priorities for the coming month
a) Individual instrument plans
CDS: Network Structure study
2 Macrospicule studies from Dave Pike and Shaddia Habbal
Off-limb observations of line intensities (16 hour study) June 27
Note: There was mention of CDS giving telemetry to SUMER
23 - 26 of June and/or 16 - 19 August.
However, this was not discussed with LASCO/EIT.
LASCO/EIT will lose their extra 12 packets of telemetry
with this switch. LASCO/EIT PIs will be informed and
re-discuss this matter with the CDS and SUMER PIs.
EIT: First half of June: Continuing synoptic, polar plume studies
(as often as possible), and periodic JOP009 studies.
No new software installed until July.
SUMER: Beginning of June: Continuing JOPs 009,012/017. JOP033 is a target
of opportunity. The slit will remain west of central meridian until
the end of June. Sometime in July it will be moved to central
meridian and will dwell there for approximately 1 week.
SUMER noted that they have not heard anything concerning JOP049.
SOCs have sent Dermott McMillan e-mail several weeks ago and not
obtained a response. Therefore the JOP will be canceled since we
have not heard from the Coordinator.
UVCS: Most of June will be instrument calibration due to the UVCS meetings.
JOP009 and synoptic.
LASCO: Synoptic. Will be working toward getting spectroscopy in C1.
S/W upload (probably will not happen be in June, July more likely).
Onsets of disconnection events, partial frame FeX in equatorial
region. They did some of these observations in January and saw CME
onset.
MDI: Will continue Dynamics until July 13. Currently receiving full-disk
dopplergram every minute. On June 13, MDI will be switching modes to
get full-disk dopplergrams every 30 seconds and no intensity grams.
During week 26 or 27, MDI will probably have to uplink a flat-field
load. (Using background queue commands.)
Tom Berger and Ted Tarbell have announced that the Lockheed-Martin
Solar Physics Group will be observing at the Swedish Vacuum Solar
Telescope on La Palma from 1 to 14 June 1997. The MDI weekly planner
in the EOF will have a timely reports from the La Palma observers and
will pass along theweekly plans and requests for joint observing.
Experiments whose quiet sun programs would benefit from high resolution
photospheric observations including magnetograms are encouraged to
schedule them in this time period. They will share data from the La
Palma run for comparison with any coordinated SOHO observations. MDI
will be running its Dynamics Program (full disk helioseismology) for
most of this period and therefore will take no high resolution
observations. In the last few days, MDI will switch to a high
resolution velocity campaign for local helioseismology studies such as
time-distance. The La Palma observations will be coordinated with
these to provide magnetograms and horizontal velocities from
correlation tracking.
