WEEKLY MEETING MINUTES February 23 - March 01 1. Announcements ----------------- Next week there will be TV coverage in the EOF of the eclipse events. The media frenzy begins on Wednesday afternoon and lasts until Thursday morning. It may or may not be finished in time for the Thursday daily meeting. On the day of the eclipse, Art Poland suggests people supply Project Scientist Team with recent images that morning to update SOHO WWW page (George Dimitoglou and Joe Gurman will work on this among others) Project Scientist wants to put together prominent WWW site. 2. Operations Constraints ------------------------- * DSN schedule: Have a few down-link only contacts next week: Tuesday, February 24 -- DSS-63, from 07:15 - 14:15 UT Friday, February 27 -- DSS-65, from 07:40 - 14:00 UT For the eclipse on February 26, Wallops will be providing backup telemetry support from 14:00 - 22:30 UT. This data will be recorded. They will be "starting up the equipment" an hour earlier at 13:00 UT -- so we will know in advance of any problems. There are also no station handovers for several hours on the prime DSN antenna (DSS-24) around the eclipse sign. MDI to submit and OCD for extra VC2 for one hour centered on the eclipse time. * Submodes: Submode #5 until 20:00 UT on Friday when SUMER will stop observing, power down their detectors and close their door. Will then switch to Submode #6 over the weekend. 3. Coordinated Observations ---------------------------- Planned observations include: M Feb 23 (W09) VLA Radio Observations of CMEs, (#5000), EIT/LASCO/VLA 14:57:16-22:57:16 UT, EOF: Nat Gopalswamy JOP018 (#4055), Sunspot Velocity Field and Line Profiles, CDS/SUMER/MDI (synoptic)/Sac Peak T Feb 24 VLA Radio Observations of CMEs, (#5000), EIT/LASCO/VLA 15:23:15-23:23:15 UT, EOF: Nat Gopalswamy JOP018 (#4055), Sunspot Velocity Field and Line Profiles, CDS/SUMER/MDI (synoptic)/Sac Peak W Feb 25 T Feb 26 Total Solar Eclipse Wallops Backup Telemetry Support for Eclipse 14-22:30 UT F Feb 27 SUMER end observing late in day. Switch to Submode #6 at 20:00 UT S Feb 28 VLA Radio Observations of CMEs, (#5000), EIT/LASCO/VLA 14:37:37-22:37:37 UT, EOF: Nat Gopalswamy S Mar 01 Other Activities for Week 09: * February 22-26, 1998: Eclipse Observations, POC: SOC & Phil Judge See: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/~soc/ECLIPSE/index.html - NSO/HAO/Michigan State/Rhodes College/Lindau expeditions SOHO Supporting Observations: JOP071 (#4060) - Royal Metereological Institute of Belgium (#4065) - ESA/SSD Eclipse Expedition (#4070) - Williams College Eclipse Expedition (#4075) - NSF, SAO, GSFC Eclipse Expedition (#4080) - Institut d'Astrophysique, Paris - CNRS (#4085) * MDI high-cadence helioseismology, synoptic magnetograms every 96 minutes Submodes: Monday at 00:00 UT to Friday at 20:00 UT --> Submode #5 Friday at 20:00 UT to Sunday at 24:00 UT --> Submode #6 Planners for Week 09: SOL - Russ Howard CDS - Chris Haskell SUMER - Udo Schuehle UVCS - Shadia Habbal EIT - Barbara Thompson MDI - Emily Zamkoff LASCO - Russ Howard Relevant Notes: * Eclipse details --- > See the WWW page. CDS -- Eclipse support continues until one week after the eclipse. Observing on the limb Thursday during the eclipse. Monday and Tuesday (JOP018), want to target sunspot on the limb. SUMER -- Tuesday and Wednesday -- Quiet Sun velocity measurements. Uncertain if can support JOP018 (may be too bright), will determine later. UVCS -- Coordinated campaign with Galileo (see eclipse support WWW pages), South Pole on Monday, West limb on Tuesday, Wednesday continue with Galileo, Thursday evening will skip the synoptic program for eclipse support. Friday, visible light mapping at South Polar coronal hole to compare with ground-based observatory (Shadia Habbel). LASCO -- Normal synoptic until the eclipse. Supporting Pasachoff's eclipse expedition. (See WWW pages). EIT -- Synoptic and 195 CME watch all week. Supporting VLA observations with normal CME watch. For JOP018, prefer to run early to overlap with VLA observations. At eclipse totality will be taking a 304 image. When the get the submode #6 over the weekend, will perform the CME watch at full field and full resolution. MDI -- Continuous contact. During eclipse, for 15 minutes will take some full disk magnetograms and some velocities. Also, decided on timing to uplink the new submode #3 patch on Monday March 2. Will uplink after the station handover (~ 18:00 UT). Amendment to EIT report for Weekly Meeting Minutes: > EIT -- Synoptic and 195 CME watch all week. Supporting VLA observations > with normal CME watch. For JOP018, prefer to run early to overlap > with VLA observations. At eclipse totality will be taking a 304 > image. When the get the submode #6 over the weekend, will perform > the CME watch at full field and full resolution. During totality over Curacao, and for the next ~ 20 minutes, we will be running a polar plume subfield study to support the HAO plume experiment on Curacao. Roughly during totality in Guadeloupe, we will be taking full-frame, full-res images in Fe XII 195 A and He II 304 A in support of a Meudon experiment there. Joe Gurman
