SOHO WEEKLY PLANNING MEETING MINUTES For Week 20, May 13-19, 1996 Notes by Laura Allen and Eliane Larduinat 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS Helen Mason has a student coming for the summer who needs a car and a place to stay. People are asked to help if they can. 2. MONTHLY SCHEDULE UPDATE See SOHO Web pages under /operations/schedule/monthly.txt for upcoming maneuvers, collaborations, and JOPs. Bill Worrall is going to negotiatate with DSN. After the 2 months of continuous contact, the SOHO DSN contact times should better coincide with our normal working hours. Jim Klimchuck (NRL) presented a proposal for a Yohkoh-SOHO collaboration for the measurement of the filling factors of coronal loops. Filling factor uncertainties are still very large and there is a need for good spectroscopic diagnostics. Jim will work out an observing sequence with CDS and would like to have observations during the next week or so (presence of active region). Study will try to understand what temperatures and emissions from Yohkho mean by comparing Yohkho's broad band filters with spectra from CDS and SUMER. Would like to measure time variability of plasma in the loops and they expect to see plasma at whole range of temperatures from a few thousand to few million degrees. However, the focus would be on the hotter rather than the cooler loops. Also, pointed out that the closer the region of study is to the center of the disk, the easier it would be to subtract the background. The duration of the "Fill Fac N" sequence is 2 hours and they would like to repeat it a few times in order to get a better signal to noise ratio. MDI magnetograms could also contribute to the study, but, this needs to be coordinated with MDI which may not be taking these automatically. EIT would participate in this study but only if it does not interfere with their pre-established synoptic set. However, EIT will be running a sequence with FOV about equal to MDI high resolution FOV. EIT could move the region (except on Tuesday). Andrez Fludra will coordinate this study for CDS. 3. OPERATIONS CONSTRAINTS DSN Schedule (see SOHO Web pages). Long contacts for next week start around 20:00 UT for most of the days. Momentum management. On Thursday May 16, spinning-up gyros (30 to 45 min) Actual burns on May 21 or 22 (Roger Rowe will send out email with more detailed timeline). MATRA requested MDI to perform jitter tests. This should take only 15 to 20 minutes, but times for VC2 and NRT need to be coordinated. Preparations for momentum management: Instruments that will close doors: CDS, SUMER, UVSC, LASCO, EIT(TBC), Instruments that do not need special preparations: MDI, VIRGO, CELIAS-MTOF. CELIAS-CTOF and STOF are TBC. All instruments should confirm their intentions via Email to the SOC. (soc@soc.nascom.nasa.gov) 4. COORDINATED OPERATIONS JOP Information (for a detailed description, see the SOHO Web pages) JOP002 Alan Gabriel will be here next week to coordinate. SWAN will participate for galatic survey (a SWAN representative will be here). If CDS cannot participate, this execution of JOP002 will be cancelled. In this case, the momentum management on Friday May 17 would also be cancelled. Decision expected by Wed May 15. Total duration should be less than 16 hours as required by the helioseismology experiments. EIT/LASCO would like 120 to 180 minutes dwell time at 45 degrees. JOP002-test Scheduled for May 15. Results will help in decision to go ahead with JOP002 and need for momentum management on May 17. JOP027 Postponed (cancelled for May 16) Updated Schedule for JOPs and Intercalibrations on Week 20: M May 13 Intercal009; coordinator : Joe Michels (UVCS) Start: 15:00 UT Duration: 7.5 hours. During contact, NRT not required Participants: UVCS and SUMER. (LASCO TBD) Yohkoh-SOHO collaboration. T May 14 JOP022; coordinator: Philippe Lemaire (SUMER) Start: 16:00 UT Duration: 5 hours Participants: SUMER/CDS + MDI if VC2 can overlap with JOP run time + EIT if it fits into their synoptic plan W May 15 ICAL001-- Coordinator: Udo Schuehle (SUMER) Start: 00:00 UT Duration: 165 minutes Participants: This run will be a SUMER-only activity. (CDS cannot participate because of GIS problems) JOP002-test; Coordinator: Philippe Lemaire (SUMER) Start: ~18:30 UT Duration: 2 hours for test NRT: Not required Participants: SUMER/CDS/UVCS + EIT/LASCO since only their synoptic set is needed. T May 16 F May 17 Momentum management -- experiments close doors if needed S May 18 Experiments reopen doors, CDS reconfigure S May 19 Normal operations, CDS reconfigure 5. WEEKLY SCIENCE TIMELINE MDI VC2 On Tuesday May 14th, MDI wants an hour of overlap with JOP022 for VC2 An OCD is in effect for 2 half-hour blocks of VC2 during each long contact for next few days. Baseline VC2 for short contacts 10 minutes. No additional telemetry submode tests for EIT are scheduled. MDI plans a large command uploads by background-queue to reload their flat-field. LASCO will start their regular weekly uploads (a few hundred commands) on Monday or Tuesday. 6.
