(Notes taken by Craig DeForest of MDI) ANNOUNCEMENTS: NRT will begin not at 15:00 but at 17:00 today. FOT REPORT (Glen Miller speaks): - There was an off-point anomaly last night, during one of the non-contact periods. It appears to have been an anomalous roll of > 1.0 arcmin. An investigation is currently underway. - The roll steering law table was updated. - We have acquired two new guide stars. - There are "lots" of single event upsets happening. A correlation study is being done on magnitude versus anomaly/SEU frequency. - Pass schedule: 14:00UT - 19:45 UT \______(one long pass) 16:40UT - 22:18 UT / 02:09UT - 05:09 UT - NRT yesterday was OK (viz the CMS problem from Tuesday). CMS1 and CMS2 are both running OK [as of the time of the morning meeting]. More on that later in the notes. EXPERIMENT STATUS: GOLF: Almost reached their maximum temperature; heating level was reduced through FOT commanding (as the NRT link was down). They're currently stabilizing again before changing heating values again. VIRGO: Had problems with their front door. SPMA got opened OK. POMA got opened OK, DIRAT is in internal calibration mode. The LOI cover wouldn't stay open -- they think there's a power problem triggering some sort of fail-safe (so the door would open, trigger something, and close again). They plan to fix that today. MDI: Turned on their observing sequence during the so-brief NRT-s period yesterday. Door is open. They plan on a table load this morning, followed by PZT offset tests in the afternoon. SUMER: could not command yesterday and "are upset about that" [See note farther down for comments from Art Poland]. CDS: No activities. (No NRT.) LASCO/EIT: Stabilized the EIT sector wheel. They were not able to start enough sequences -- not enough commanding time. UVCS: No activities. (No NRT.) SWAN: No activities. (No NRT.) CELIAS: Switched on HV for the first time. All HV's are operative. Everything is good. PLAN FOR TODAY: - (DSN schedule is above in the FOT report) - We'll have a somewhat shortened NRT (compared to the planned 7 hours) during the long pass, then 2 more hours during the later pass. - There will be a 1/2 hour break in NRT around lunchtime, for VIRGO to run some TSTOL procedures. ISSUES: -"NRT Follies": [Art Poland and others speak]: The almost complete lack of NRT yesterday raised some hackles. There was only one 10-minute interval at the very end of the pass; however, in the planning meeting there was a 1-hour period earmarked. The fact that some swift-to-act experimenters were able to use the fleeting NRT, while others were not so lucky, did not encourage a strong sense of camaraderie. Art comments that the (lack of) NRT period yesterday is a "serious problem" and encourages everyone concerned to talk to him about it. SOC explained that the VIRGO session was extended due their problems opening the LOI door. The experimenters were notified early on during the day that the NRT would most likely not take place. [Keith Walyus speaks]: There are two issues surrounding the CMS part of the NRT chain. They are: * the CMS lexiphage FOT cannot recreate the LASCO problem (in which CMS silently eats the occasional command from LASCO) in a controlled manner. However, a software problem was found that should generate the observed symptoms. A short term solution is for the CMS to generate an existing error code ("syntax error") when the problem is observed. This patch will be implemented sometime in the next two weeks at the earliest. PLEASE NOTE: ACTION ITEM FOR YOU! A longer term solution is to generate a new error code for the problem, but feedback is needed from each experiment team to know how a new error code will affect each IWS. Experimenters are requested to check with their developers and let Keith know what impact the change would have, ASAP. " EXPERIMENTERS MUST INDICATE THE IMPACT ON THEIR SOFTWARE TO " ELIANE LARDUINAT BEFORE MONDAY, JAN 22" * the CMS holiday Troubleshooting is still continuing on the problem Tuesday where CMS stopped forwarding commands to be uplinked. The CMS backup system didn't work either on Tuesday, apparently due to an operator error: a wrong file name was opened during the startup process. A new startup script is being developed to avoid that pitfall with the CMS startup / switchover process. [Keith is still speaking] If you feel your instrument is being left in an unsafe state at the end of the day, please be sure to let "everyone" [probably the SOC and/or FOT] know. Otherwise, nothing will happen until the next business day. NRT status as of the morning meeting: CMS1 OK, CMS2 OK; NRT commanding is enabled. - "Visit from Dr. Bonnet": [Vicente Domingo speaks] Dr. Bonnet will be visiting the EOF on February 7th. He would like to attend the morning planning meeting, then circulate through the different instruments' areas, to get a feel for operations here. The daily planning meeting will be at 9am on that day; please talk to Vicente if that's a problem.
