Sequential Bursts (April 25, 2014)

A single active region on the Sun ejected at least half a dozen bursts of plasma, several of clouds of which could be seen spreading across parts of the solar surface over two days (Apr. 19-21, 2014). These coronal mass ejections headed out into space as well, but in this movie from the ultraviolet imager on the STEREO (Ahead) spacecraft, we can see them spread out like a curtain above the Sun's surface. Remember that since STEREO is currently positioned to observe the far side of the Sun, these bursts would not be heading towards Earth. Credit: STEREO/NASA.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.
