A single active region shot out about a dozen small spurts of plasma over a day (Oct. 9, 2011). The STEREO Ahead spacecraft caught the action in extreme UV light as the region was beginning to reach the edge of the Sun, giving it a good semi-profile view. None of these were shots that produced any major solar storms, but it was still fun to watch the series of eruptions. The Sun is producing more sunspots these days as its level of activity continues to rise.

SOHO began its Weekly Pick some time after sending a weekly image or video clip to the American Museum of Natural History (Rose Center) in New York City. There, the SOHO Weekly Pick is displayed with some annotations on a large plasma display.

If your institution would also like to receive the same Weekly Pick from us for display (usually in Photoshop or QuickTime format), please send your inquiry to steele.hill@gsfc.nasa.gov.
